Type emojis and kaomoji on Reddit

Reddit never gave its editor an emoji picker, which suits the culture fine right up until you want a ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and end up searching "shrug emoji copy paste" for the hundredth time.

What that costs you today

No emoji button anywhere in the editor

Kaomoji live on copy-paste sites full of ads

The markdown and rich-text editors behave differently

A table flip pasted wrong loses its arms

The same thirty seconds, twice

The thread is wrong on the internet, and the reply calls for a table flip.

The copy-paste-site detour

  1. 01 Search "table flip copy paste" in another tab
  2. 02 Find a site, dodge the ads, copy the kaomoji
  3. 03 Paste it into Reddit and notice an arm did not survive

The escape sequence ate the shrug’s arm again.

With Emoji Anywhere

  1. 01 Type :tableflip in the reply
  2. 02 Press Enter. (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ arrives whole

No other tab, no ads, no missing limbs.

What you would type instead

:shrug ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

the Reddit classic, arms intact

:tableflip (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

for when the thread deserves it

Where it works on Reddit

Make it yours

:remind RemindMe! 2 days

Custom shortcodes type anything, including bot commands. :remind can be your RemindMe line, :src your source request, :edit your standard edit note.

Reddit's rich-text editor is built on Lexical, the same engine as Facebook's, and it fights outside edits the same way. The extension drives it through its own events, so the kaomoji arrive with all their limbs.

Questions

Does the shrug keep its arms?

In the rich-text editor, yes: the characters land exactly as typed, backslash and all. Markdown mode treats a lone backslash as an escape, the same trap that eats pasted shrugs, so use the rich editor there or double the backslash.

Is this not a bit un-Reddit?

The kaomoji are as Reddit as it gets; they predate emoji on the site by a decade. The same shortcodes type both, so :shrug and :eyes cover whichever register the subreddit runs on.

Is my typing sent anywhere?

No. Matching happens on your device, the extension makes no network requests, and nothing you type leaves your browser.
